Giovanni Bortoluzzi, the Italian traditional overtone singer and instrumentalist/musician is coming over to the Netherlands! A whole afternoon of overtone techique: you will unlock your ability to perceive and control the harmonic overtones, using your regular speaking voice.
After learning the basic overtone singing techniques, you’ll learn how to listen and recognize the overtones, in order to amplify them.
No experience needed. The only requirement is the curiosity for the world of sound!
What is overtone singing?
Overtone singing is the ability to filter and amplify the harmonic overtones of the voice, while singing a constant pitch.
The resulting effect is an high-pitched, whistle-like melody accompanied by a lower pitch that acts like a drone.
From a scientific point of view: when a fundamental tone is sung by vibrating the vocal folds, many overtones start to resonate inside the oral cavities. These overtones can be filtered and amplified by changing the shape of the vocal tract, mainly by changing the position of the tongue. This way, the overtones can be heard over the sound of the fundamental tone, giving the listener the impression of hearing two notes at the same time.
