The rapid rise of technological advancements in laryngeal imaging and acoustic and aerodynamic assessment has allowed clinicians treating voice and swallowing disorders to diagnose and treat more patients than ever before. However, a strong fund of knowledge is necessary to be able to take advantage of the wealth of diagnostic information provided by this 21st century technology to deliver treatment. This course aims to provide speech pathologists and other voice clinicians a comprehensive overview of diagnosis and management of primarily voice disorders within the multidisciplinary framework of a modern voice and swallowing center. Our speakers will cover a wide variety of topics with specific focus on behavioral therapy of voice disorders and chronic cough treatment, and evaluation of the aging voice, which has particular relevance in today’s world.

OBJECTIVES: By the end of this conference the attendees will be able to:

Discuss the process of interpreting a laryngeal study
Identify pathology in laryngeal exams
Review how the therapies used in the treatment of benign lesions
List ways that therapy can be incorporated into pre and post patient care to protect the voice
Discuss medical diagnosis of Paradoxical Vocal Fold Motion (PFVM) and Exercise-Induced Laryngeal Obstruction (ELIO)
Review the treatment of PVFM/EILO
Determine when to refer the patient for additional testing
Explain the laryngeal changes that occur in elderly patients
Summarize how the aging voice is treated with therapy
