Recently, the World Voice Day lecture series “The Science of Vocal Artistry – Community Outreach Lecture Series on Proper Voice Use” came to a successful close. Co-hosted by the Shenzhen University Research Center for Integration of Voice Medicine and Artistic Voice and the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) Center for Integration of Science and Art, and co-organized by the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at Shenzhen University General Hospital and the Shenzhen Association for Art and Science, the event featured four insightful sessions.
The first lecture took place on April 13 at the Shenzhen Cultural Center, drawing a diverse audience and receiving widespread acclaim. Three distinguished experts in voice medicine and vocal arts were invited to share their expertise:
Prof. Bi Baoyi, mezzo-soprano and Director of SUSTech’s Center for Integration of Science and Art;
Dr. Wang Lu, Deputy Chief Physician of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at Shenzhen University General Hospital and head of its Voice Disorders Subspecialty;
Prof. Yang Xiaoxia, soprano and Associate Professor at the Shenzhen Technology University (SZTU) Conservatory of Music.
The lectures offered a rich blend of medical and artistic perspectives, covering topics such as:
The science behind vocal production
Healthy vocal techniques
Voice protection and disorder prevention
Dr. Wang Lu provided an in-depth anatomical breakdown of voice physiology, explaining the causes, symptoms, and treatments of common voice disorders. Through real-life case studies, images, and videos, she highlighted the importance of vocal health awareness.
On the artistic side, Prof. Bi Baoyi and Prof. Yang Xiaoxia demonstrated practical vocal techniques, including:
Optimal posture and breathing methods (emphasizing diaphragmatic support)
Resonance training (using humming and vowel exercises to enhance chest, oral, and head resonance)
Interactive sessions allowed attendees to practice under guidance, experiencing how proper technique creates a fuller, more expressive voice.
The series not only educated but also inspired, fostering a deeper appreciation for the intersection of science and art in vocal excellence.
