EVERY DAY A VOICE (Phyland, 2026)
Every day is a voice day…
for work and for art,
for speaking, singing
and being heard.

On April 16, we listen wider: to the bright, the fragile, the fierce, the different
a chorus of colours crossing oceans,
each voice carrying a world.

We tend them like living instruments:
kept supple, not strained,
used with care, not worn thin.

We speak to connect, not to divide,
to reach, not to drown out
and we remember, with quiet gratitude,
that our voices can also be our votes.

The human voice carries our phonetic and semantic information. It is not only a bridge for communication but also our “second face”. Like a unique musical instrument exclusive to humans, every vocalization conveys our emotions and personality to the world. This sophisticated “instrument” requires careful protection.
For children and teenagers, this is a critical period for vocal development and also a high-risk stage for voice problems. Full of energy, many children tend to shout loudly and imitate strange voices. This causes long-term excessive friction of the vocal cords, which may lead to vocal cord congestion, inflammation, and even vocal nodules, resulting in hoarseness, inability to sing high notes, and off-pitch singing. These issues not only affect daily study and activities but may also negatively impact children’s social confidence and psychological growth in the long run.
How to Protect the Voice Scientifically
If you notice abnormal vocal changes in your child (lasting less than two weeks), you may start with the following daily voice care methods:
Keep hydrated: Encourage children to drink plenty of water and eat more fruits and vegetables. Use a humidifier in dry environments to create a favorable condition for the vocal cords.
Use the voice properly:
Refuse shouting: Walk closer when talking instead of raising your voice.
Warm up the voice: Before long-time reading, practice lip trills or straw phonation to warm up and reduce the risk of vocal cord injury.
Maintain good posture: Speak with head up and chest out; avoid slouching, which can tense laryngeal muscles.
Avoid irritants: Keep away from secondhand smoke, dust, and spicy food. Do not lie down immediately after meals to reduce potential vocal cord damage caused by gastric reflux.
If vocal problems persist for more than two weeks after adopting the above measures, professional medical help is needed.
Professional Care: Heal the Voice through a “Vocal Adventure”
To make voice training fun and appealing for children, the Rehabilitation Department of Guangdong Women and Children Hospital adopts an interesting Vocal Adventure Program — Pediatric Resonant Voice Therapy for children with voice disorders.
Voice therapy is designed as a wonderful adventure:
Children act as adventurers, guided by speech therapists to explore 8 themed adventure islands.
Learn “superpowers”: Through games, children actively master correct vocalization skills to restore a healthy voice.
Adventure with partners: Team up with other kids to complete the journey together, aiming to gain a healthy and pleasant voice.
As an internationally recognized systematic pediatric voice therapy approach, this method greatly improves children’s interest and cooperation in treatment.
When Do You Need Professional Voice Guidance?
Professional assessment and training at the Rehabilitation Department are recommended for the following voice problems:
Adolescent voice disorders: Especially the “feminine voice in boys”. During puberty, boys’ voices deepen naturally. Some boys keep using high-pitched childish voices and develop incorrect vocal habits, which may lead to social teasing and affect physical and mental health.
Low speaking volume, easy vocal fatigue, dull voice, and desire for a better vocal tone.
Vocal nodules, early vocal polyps, and postoperative rehabilitation for vocal polyps or cysts.
Narrow vocal range and difficulty hitting high notes when singing; voice problems for anchors and hosts; voice training for transgender individuals.
April 16, 2026 marks the 24th World Voice Day, with the global theme Caring for Our Voices.
On this special day, we release this popular science article to raise public awareness of vocal health, especially to protect children’s natural and beautiful voices.
May professional and scientific care empower every young voice, letting children convey their dreams with healthy voices and embrace the world with beautiful sounds as they grow up.
